What is Argon?

If you’re looking for replacement windows, you’ve more than likely focused on choosing the style and material type that best fits your home. Another essential feature to consider is which type of glass will help keep your home at optimal comfort throughout the year. Glass can influence the amount of heat or cold that gets inside your home and contribute to energy efficiency.

A major feature of our Low-E insulating glass is that it can be crafted with argon. Wondering what argon is? We get that question frequently.

The simple answer is that argon is a colorless, nontoxic gas that’s denser than air. It’s one of the most abundant atmospheric gases, and it doesn’t react with other elements. Argon also has low thermal conductivity, meaning heat does not easily transfer across it. This makes the gas perfect to use as a form of insulation in window glass because it slows down the transfer of hot air into your home during the warmer months and slows down the transfer of heat out of your home in the winter.

The Benefits

We use insulating argon between panes of Low-E glass because it provides multiple benefits to our customers. Some results are shared below.

  • Depending on the glass type, Argon blocks 69% to 94% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays, protecting your home from harmful rays.
  • Argon helps keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer to help keep you comfortable.
  • Better insulating windows can help lower your energy bills.
